If God were a guidebook collector and he was considering paring down his hardcopy material and going more digital - this is one of the guides he would be loath to part with. It is written by the original father of ski extreme and ski mountaineering in general, Anselme Baud. Along with a core of others from the Continent they were doing extraordinary ski descents in the Mt. Blanc region of the Alps in the 70's when American's were generally oblivious to the depth of their art. It makes the thought of taking a ski mountaineering trip to France extremely accessible and as with any good climbing/ski/hiking guide Anselme divides the tours and descents into sections that give you an understanding of the region and the difficulty of the outing. The pictures are excellent and you get to see the scope of each ski site - from the most harrowing descents to fine tours that mortals can comprehend. There is no excuse for the best guidebooks not to have copious inspiring photographs and this is where the guidebook as an art form takes the high road in that you will return to this book repeatedly to be inspired by achievements that open your eyes to what is possible and may someday be part of your personal history. It sits proudly on my shelf just vibrating with that possibility.
Product is exactly what description said it would be and is in even better condition than I expected.
I am planning a ski trip to France next March. This book has allowed me to get a sneak preview of the possibilities. Great photos and descriptive text to whet my appetite!
The benchmark for information on the Chamonix Valley
This is a fantastic guidebook--hair-raising, inspiring, helpful. It covers ski-mountaineering ascents/descents in the Mont Blanc Massif. Most are readily accessible from Chamonix.Baud lists 156 routes with multiple variations of many. this includes all but a couple from Mont Blanc Ski Tours.The author includes extensive information useful to evaluating each route, including aspect, elevation & angle, season, difficulty, risk & multiple photographs of most routes. There are also great anecdotes about steep skiing history from the author's own experience including many tragic fatalities, notably his own son's.While he does include numerous classic, scenic & easy "Belvedere" routes, Anselm Baud was one of the originators of extreme skiing in the 1970's, so even many of the easier routes in this guidebook are pretty serious undertakings. Given his experience & background, it's understandable that difficulty to Baud is less than it is to other guidebook authors, so be aware that these ratings are consistently easier than other sources--start with something gentle to get a feel for his system or you could quickly be in over your head!The hard routes in this book are strictly for the bleeding edge: extremely fit, risk-tolerant & skilled ski-mountaineers [with access to helicopters] who are willing to wait decades for the right conditions. Nevertheless, it's interesting to see what has been done & learn a bit about the history of these routes.You can buy this book at any sports shop or bookstore in Chamonix.
